Calculate Your BMI
In general, for a person to be a candidate for weight loss surgery at Manhattan Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery Center, they must have a BMI of 40 of higher. If an individual has high-risk co-morbid conditions, a BMI of 35 may qualify them for surgery. Use the tool below to calculate your BMI.
|18.5 – 24.9||Normal Weight||Minimal|
|25 – 29.9||Overweight||Increased|
|30 – 34.9||Obese||High|
|35 – 39.9||Severely Obese||Very High|
|40+||Morbidly Obese||Extremely High|
If your BMI was higher than 30, you may be an eligible candidate for weight loss surgery.
- Because bariatric surgery is a very serious undertaking, generally candidates must have tried non-surgical treatments such as dietary programs, behavioral modification, and exercise.
- There must be no medical or hormonal reason for the clinically severe obesity. These conditions are rare, but require treatment of the underlying medical problem.
- The candidate must be fully informed about the surgery and realistic expectations pertaining to weight loss and possible complications
- The candidate must demonstrate a willingness to accept the risks of surgery and to make dramatic lifelong changes in his/her lifestyle, dietary habits, exercise, and to commit to medical follow-up.
